An 88-year-old retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Inderjit Singh Sidhu, who has been cleaning streets around his neighbourhood in Chandigarh for over a decade, has been selected for the Padma Shri award.
Sidhu, a retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Punjab Police, went viral last year after videos showed him picking up garbage from roads and public spaces near his home in Sector 49, Chandigarh. The videos drew widespread appreciation on social media, eventually leading to official recognition.
