Victorians are set to swelter through record heat, with the town of Ouyen forecast to reach 49 degrees Celsius.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns the extreme heat could last several days, making it one of the longest heatwaves on record in Victoria.

Firefighters are bracing for challenging conditions and a statewide fire ban is in place.
