Jesus’ fellow villagers know Jesus, but they do not recognize him. For them, he is the son of a humble carpenter, and his family and clan are simple folks just like them. They still cling to their old and familiar image of him. This is different from the β€œgreat awe” of the disciples when they saw Jesus calming the waves and the sea, recognizing him as possessing divine power (Mk 4:40-41). Because of the villagers’ lack of faith, Jesus is not able to perform any mighty deed.
