Jesus’ fellow villagers know Jesus, but they do not recognize him. For them, he is the son of a humble carpenter, and his family and clan are simple folks just like them. They still cling to their old and familiar image of him. This is different from the “great awe” of the disciples when they saw Jesus calming the waves and the sea, recognizing him as possessing divine power (Mk 4:40-41). Because of the villagers’ lack of faith, Jesus is not able to perform any mighty deed.
