A single post on X stopped India’s scrolling thumb.

Nalini Unagar shared a casual conversation with her neighbourhood dry cleaner, and accidentally reopened one of the country’s oldest, most uncomfortable debates: Is education still the safest route to a stable life?

According to her post, the dry cleaning shop is run by a husband-and-wife team with two helpers. Their monthly numbers stunned many online. Roughly Rs 2.8 lakh in revenue, modest expenses, and a take-home profit of over Rs 2 lakh a month.

As Unagar wrote: β€œYesterday, I was talking with the dry cleaning shop owner near my house, where I regularly go... I was shocked when they said they earn around 2,00,000 per month, which is equal to a 10+ years experienced software engineer in India.”

The internet did the rest.

But beneath the shock lies a deeper, growing unease across urban India, especially among middle-class families.
