A filthy rich man running a massive child trafficking network. Schoolgirls being raped on the pretext of massage services, high-profile men giving girls the worst time of their lives on a picturesque island haunted by silenced screams and a justice system doing grave injustice. The Epstein scandal reads like a political thriller, but it's not.

The case naming Epstein first surfaced in 2005, when the parents of a 14-year-old girl went to police. Two decades later, the scandal continues to reverberate across courtrooms and corridors of power, with each new document release exposing fresh, unsettling details. Though the man at the centre of the scandal is long gone, the fallout from his crimes endures.

Most recently, Britain's former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested amid a probe into the Epstein case link and Bill Gates had to skip his scheduled keynote address at AI Summit in Delhi as the controversy surrounding Epstein cast a renewed shadow.

WHO WAS JEFFREY EPSTEIN?

Before his name became synonymous with one of the most notorious sex trafficking scandals, Jeffrey Epstein cultivated the image of a brilliant, self-made billionaire: charming, well-connected and extraordinarily wealthy.

He moved easily among Presidents, Princes, Wall Street titans, tech moguls and Nobel laureates. He owned sprawling mansions in Manhattan and Palm Beach, a private Caribbean island, a fleet of aircraft and everything that screams wealth and power.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 20, 1953, Epstein never completed a college degree. Yet at just 21, he secured a job teaching physics and mathematics at Manhattan’s prestigious Dalton School. From there, connections opened doors to Wall Street, where he joined investment bank Bear Stearns. His tenure ended amid allegations of professional misconduct.

Epstein went on to establish his own financial management firm, claiming to serve only billionaires. Much about his fortune remained opaque, fuelling speculation about how he accumulated such vast wealth.

Behind the facade of success, Epstein was running a years-long sex trafficking operation that exploited underage girls. He sexually assaulted, recruited and trafficked vulnerable teenagers.

In 1991, Epstein met Ghislaine Maxwell, who went on to become a key facilitator of his abuse network, recruiting, grooming and normalising exploitation within elite social circles.
