French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Sunday that he has formally authorized the construction of a new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to replace France’s flagship Charles de Gaulle.

That vessel, the only nuclear-powered carrier outside the U.S. Navy, entered service in 2001 following more than a decade of construction.
