A major question is emerging over North Koreaβs unveiling of what it claims to be an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered strategic guided-missile submarine β whether Russia has assisted Pyongyang in securing the naval reactor technology that would make such a leap possible.
The submarine under construction, revealed during North Korean leader Kim Jong-unβs on-site inspection and reported by the North's state media Korean Central News Agency on Thursday, is significantly larger than the US Navyβs Virginia-class nuclear attack submarine. KCNA said it represents an βepoch-makingβ upgrade in the Northβs nuclear war deterrent.
