Approaching its fifth anniversary, the official plaque honouring police who defended the 6 January 2021 Capitol attack is nowhere to be found. Not on display as legally required, its whereabouts are unknown, believed to be in storage. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, has yet to unveil it. The Trump administration’s Department of Justice also seeks to dismiss a police officers' lawsuit demanding its display. The Architect of the Capitol, responsible for the plaque, has declined comment citing federal litigation.

Determined to preserve history, some 100 members of Congress, mostly Democrats, have taken matters into their own hands. For months, they have mounted poster board-style replicas of the Jan. 6 plaque outside their office doors, creating a Capitol complex awash with makeshift remembrances.
