Incarcerated for two decades, Jacob Smith and his fellow inmates are now embarking on regular journeys to far-flung, exotic locales โ€“ no passport required, just a virtual reality headset. "I went to Thailand, man!" Smith recalled with a grin, describing his initial experience strapping on a VR device and being transported to the lush landscapes and bustling markets of Southeast Asia.

This innovative programme is being introduced to California prisons by a Los Angeles-based non-profit organisation.
