Investors took one look at the Trump administration's criminal investigation of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and decided to resuscitate the "Sell America" trade Sunday night, selling off US stock futures, bonds and the dollar.

But the "Sell America" trade was relatively muted Monday morning, with US stocks paring losses. The Dow was down just 90 points, or 0.18 percent, after falling more than 400 points earlier. The broader S&P 500 was flat. The tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.2 percent.

The US dollar weakened against other major currencies.
