President Donald Trump insisted he wants to βget Greenland, including right, title and ownership,β but he said he wouldnβt employ force to achieve that β using his speech Wednesday at the World Economic Forum to repeatedly deride European allies and vow that NATO shouldnβt stand in the way of US expansionism.
βWhat Iβm asking for is a piece of ice, cold and poorly located,β Trump said, declaring of NATO: βItβs a very small ask compared to what we have given them for many, many decades.β
βThis enormous unsecured island is actually part of North America,β Trump said. βThatβs our territory.β
Trump also said that the US is booming but Europe is βnot heading in the right direction.β His ambitions to wrest control of Greenland from NATO ally Denmark threaten to tear apart relations with many of Washington's closest allies.
He tried to focus on his efforts to tame inflation and spur the economy back home. But his appearance at the gathering of global elites focused more on his gripes with other countries.
