In a border so tense that a minor skirmish may test the country’s defence and offensive capability, India is all set to operationalise the first-of-its-kind highway airstrip of the North-Eastern region. A roughly 4-km stretch of highway in Assam can be converted into a military airstrip during combat or disaster situations, marking the first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in India’s northeastern frontier.
