Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has just announced her intent to run for president in the 2028 election, prompting speculations that it is an attempt to preempt the impeachment complaint filed against her and deflect attention from the upcoming confirmation hearing of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is charged with crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Duterte is the frontrunner in pre-election surveys and the official filing of candidacies will start in October 2027, so there should be no pressure for the vice president or any other potential candidate to announce their election plans so far ahead of time.
