Few things are worse than when youโre dealing with something disappointing or hard, and you go to a friend only to hear, โHang in there,โ or โEverything happens for a reason.โ Most of the time, those phrases leave us feeling unsupported.
Most of us donโt even realize weโre guilty of this. Because weโve heard phrases like โYou got thisโ or โThereโs more fish in the sea,โ we assume weโre offering comfort, support or wisdom. But while well-intentioned, these lines often backfire, leaving the listener feeling dismissed or invalidated.
