Angus Taylor has been elected the Liberal partyโs new leader, ousting Sussan Ley in a partyroom ballot, 34 votes to 17.
The stronger than expected victory sees the conservative and former shadow defence minister become the partyโs 17th leader, ending Leyโs nine-month tenure as Australiaโs first female opposition leader.
Ley said she would quit parliament within weeks, in a bid to provide clear air for Taylorโs leadership, noting it was โsomething thatโs not always afforded to leaders.โ
