Iran’s authorities have imposed one of the most comprehensive communications blackouts in recent years, cutting internet and phone lines across the country.

Rare text messages sent from inside Iran, shared with news.com.au, describe a severe crackdown on protesters and an atmosphere of fear in major cities.

“The internet is not connected. I had a national internet tunnel and that’s working for now, because they’ve connected some databases, but the internet is completely cut off,” one Iranian wrote from inside the country.

According to the sender, the blackout coincided with an escalation of violence following days of protest
