A bid by senators to give counties a free hand to impose wayleave charges on public energy infrastructure in a proposed legislation will lead to an increase in electricity and data costs, the national government has warned.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said the proposal will result in increasing the cost of electricity through the additional levies by the devolved units, which will subsequently drive up the cost of connection.

The minister said the government has been working towards reducing the high cost of electricity in the country, and such a move will ultimately have a negative effect on the current electricity tariff.
